Genesis 26:9

So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, "She is really your wife! Why did you say, 'She is my sister'?" Isaac answered him, "Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her."

I had to go back and read this a couple of times, because I was thinking "haven't I read this already?"

Yes and no…

The part about Abimilech speaking to a man about pretending that a beautiful woman was his sister not his wife and therefore risking all sorts of disaster -yes. The part that was different was the key knucklehead in our story this time is Isaac. Not Abraham

Isaac, as in Abraham's son.

The Bible seems to be full of one generation telling another the story of their lives, an oral history so that they would learn the important things and not make mistakes.

To me, the "telling someone a woman is not my wife, but my sister" and all the ramifications that follow afterword would seem to be one of those things that you tell people about so that they do not do it again.

But evidently not our patriarch hero Abraham.

Because his son Isaac does the same thing.

TO THE SAME KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does this not seem to you like an afternoon Starbucks conversation between father and son.

"Son, a long time ago I got scared, I didn't trust God and I did something really stupid."

"Really, what Dad? What did you do?"

"Well to make a long story short, I told some guys…a ruler…that your mom was not my wife, I told them she was my sister…"

"You said WHAT???"

"I said that Mommy was my sister."

Flash forward a generation and Isaac seems to be doing the same thing his dad did.

Just reminds me that I need to tell my kids about all my mistakes so hopefully they can learn from what I have (or not done.)
